London International Book Fair begins [photos]

Yesterday marked the start of one of the most important events in the global publishing industry, The London Book Fair. Held annually in the spring, the London Book Fair is primarily a venue for rights negotiation and international networking. As every year, it includes a Polish stand organised by the Book Institute.

Eighteen publishers are presenting their books at a Polish stand covering 90 square metres: Gdańskie Wydawnictwo Oświatowe/Adamada, Społeczny Instytut Wydawniczy ZNAK, Wydmy Publishing House, Wydawnictwa Uniwersytu Warszawskiego (University of Warsaw Press), Wydawnictwo Literackie, Wydawnictwo WAM, Dom Wydawniczy Rebis, OZGraf – Olsztyńskie Zakłady Graficzne, Opolgraf, Narodowe Centrum Kultury (National Centre for Culture Poland), Muchomor, Wydawnictwo Marpress, Literacka, inkBOOK, polish-courses.com, Edgard, Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry, and Białostockie Zakłady Graficzne-BZGraf.

During this year's edition, the Book Institute will present translations of Polish literature published with the support of our ©POLAND Translation Programme, as well as new titles from the “New Books from Poland 2021” catalogue. In addition, an entire bookcase will be devoted to translations into Ukrainian. A poster emphasising our solidarity with Ukraine was also created for the London event by the Dobre Studio design studio.

Furthermore, in collaboration with the Institut Ramon Llull in Catalonia, we are organising a panel discussion on 'Across language and time: translating classics'. The Book Institute invited to the debate the translator of the classics of Polish literature, Charles Kraszewski, and Ka Bradley, editor-in-chief of Penguin Classics, responsible, among other things, for the English publication of Chłopi (“The Peasants”) translated by Anna Zaranko.

The meeting took place on the first day of the fair in the Olympia Theatre from 4.30pm to 5:15pm.

Along with Frankfurter Buchmesse, The London Book Fair is the most important book fair in the world. This year, the fair will welcome a total of 990 exhibitors.

This year's guest of honour is the Emirate of Sharjah (Market Focus Sharjah).

The fair will run until 7 April.
