Big increase in book sales in the United States

Sales of printed books in the United States rose by 8.2 percent in 2020 up to 751 million copies, research firm NPD BookScan reported. This is the best year since 2010. The biggest growth was registered in adult non-fiction, as well as children’s fiction.

The growth in printed book sales was driven by children’s fiction, which accounted for one-third of all book market growth in the US sales. Sales of young adults prints (the second largest category by volume) increased by 11 percent (18 million copies more than in 2019).

Sales of adult non-fiction books increased by 4.8 percent in 2020 (14 million copies) in terms of both number of copies sold and sales revenue year-over-year.

Young adult non-fiction achieved a 23 percent increase (14 million copies).
