Applications for the Albrecht Lempp Scholarship for 2023 now open

The Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, the Book Institute, and the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin are still accepting applications for the Albrecht Lempp Scholarship for the year 2023.

The aim of the scholarship is to cultivate the art of translation and writing in the spirit of literary and translation standards close to Albrecht Lempp as well as to commemorate his contribution to the German-Polish literary exchange.

The Albrecht Lempp Scholarship is intended for writers from Poland and Germany as well as for German translators of Polish literature and Polish translators of German-language literature.

Scholarship programme     

The scholarship programme consists of two one-month stays in the neighbouring country every year:

1) One month in the guest house of the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin for a Polish writer or translator. The sponsors cover travel and accommodation costs and provide a scholarship of €1,200.

2) One month in Krakow, in the rooms of the Translators’ Collegium of the Book Institute, for a German writer or translator. The sponsors cover travel and accommodation costs and provide a scholarship of €1,200.

Deadlines and application rules

Writers and translators submit electronic submissions by email. In Polish or German, they present their professional achievements to date and their work plan.

The next deadline for applications is 28 February 2023. The organisers will inform about the results by the end of March 2023. The exact date of arrival of the grantees will be arranged directly with the organisers.

Jury

The selection of scholarship holders will be made by a jury. The Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, the Book Institute, and the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin delegate one jury member each.

Albrecht Lempp (1953-2012) was an outstanding populariser and translator of Polish literature in Germany. He laid the foundations for a modern system of promoting Poland through literature. As a co-founder of the Book Institute, he received the Transatlantyk Award granted for merits in this field. For many years, he was the director of the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation and made a great contribution to the development of Polish-German relations.
