"On the Way" is a collection of Maria Konopnicka's novellas that have permanently entered the history of Polish literature and are known to generations of readers who read them as required school reading. The collection includes such texts as Dym (“Smoke”), Nasza szkapa (“Our Jade”), and Mendel Gdański (“Mendel of Gdansk”). Konopnicka's novellas - just like the works of Bolesław Prus, Eliza Orzeszkowa, or Henryk Sienkiewicz - are among the most outstanding works of Polish positivist novellas. The author was masterful in both capturing the beauty of intimate situations and describing the complex social processes characteristic of her time.
