Born in Borzęcin in 1930, Sławomir Mrożek was a playwright, satirist and prose writer who lived in Paris, the USA, Germany and Mexico. He returned to Poland in 1996, but left again in 2008 and settled in Nice, France. He died on August 15th, 2013.

Mrożek is probably the most often staged contemporary Polish playwright both in Poland and abroad, and for many years he has been, along with Stanisław Lem, one of the most commonly read writers in Poland. His works have been translated into and performed in many languages. Mrożek made his debut as a visual artist in 1950, and began to regularly publish satirical drawings in 1953. His cartoons and humorous short stories quickly brought him extreme popularity and a special place in contemporary Polish literature. He closely examined and questioned both the absurdities of life in a socialist country and the trivialised, most often post-romantic, stereotypes that shaped the consciousness of Poles. The phrase “straight out of Mrożek” has permanently entered colloquial language to describe nonsensical, unnatural aspects of everyday existence. People make argumentative points using examples taken from his works. Mrożek’s debut as a playwright came in 1956 with his play The Police, which depicted the reality of a totalitarian state, in which the central role is played by the “police” – both public and undercover officers of the security services. In order to keep the ruling authorities and society convinced that they’re necessary, Mrożek’s police officers invent dissidents so that they can justify their activities. His subsequent plays were also hugely successful. Mrożek made use of grotesque, absurd exaggeration, satire and parody, invariably displaying comic talent. At the same time, he embraced themes in his works which allowed them to be classified as parables, morality plays and philosophical tales. They deal with both the oppressive reality of communist Poland, a semi-totalitarian state, and the interpersonal relations and games that people play, usually with the aim of enslaving others. Mrożek often portrayed conflict between – as one critic described it – intellectuals (who are, de facto, merely passive puppets), ideologues (the conscious shapers of social reality) and the unthinking simpletons, the “brutes” (who rely solely on force). The intellectual usually ended up falling victim to the brute, who was merely fulfilling the wishes of the ideologue. Mrożek portrayed a world of enslavement and conformism, systematically disassembled national myths and connected politics with existence.

I have indeed laughed in all sorts of ways, out loud and silently, biologically and intellectually, but the laughter has never penetrated the center of my being. I belong to the generation for which laughter was always spiced with irony, bitterness or despair.
