Marian Sworzeń

(born 1954), lawyer by education and profession, writer by passion.

He was, among others, a judge of the District Court, owner of a second-hand bookshop, chairman of the local Citizens' Committee ‘Solidarity’, councilman and deputy mayor of Mikołów (during his term of office, he led to the creation of the Mikołowski Institute in Rafał Wojaczek's flat). Member of the editorial office of the literary magazine ‘Arkadia’ and of the board of the Upper Silesian Literary Society. Member of the Polish PEN Club.

Author of radio plays, stage plays, and novels, including Czaadajew (‘Chaadayev’ [‘Dialog' publishing house, 2007]), Niepoprawni (‘The Incorrigibles’, 2006), Melancholia w Fausheim. Powieść o rewolucji w Monachium (‘Melancholy in Fausheim. A Novel about the Munich Revolution’, 2008). Winner of the Gdynia Literary Award 2012 in the essay category for his book Opis krainy Gog (‘Description of the Land of Gog’). His latest book, Czarna ikona. Biełomor. Kanał Białomorski - dzieje, ludzie, słowa (‘Black icon. Biełomor. Białomorski Canal - History, People, Words’) was also nominated for the same award in this category.
