The Book Institute supported the German edition of Witold Gombrowicz's “Ferdydurke”
A translation of Witold Gombrowicz's Ferdydurke, with a foreword by Susan Sontag, has been published in Germany by the Kampa publishing house. The publication of the translation by Rolf Fieguth was supported by the Book Institute as part of the ©Poland Translation Programme.
In recent years, in addition to Ferdydurke, the Kampa publishing house has published almost all of Gombrowicz's works on the German market, including Kosmos (“Cosmos”), Bakakaj (“Bacacay”), Pornografia, Dziennik (“Diary”), and a collection of plays.
The author of the Ferdydurke translation, Rolf Fieguth, is a distinguished German Slavist, Germanist, and translator. As a scholar of literature, he was particularly interested in authors such as Adam Mickiewicz, Jan Kochanowski, Cyprian Kamil Norwid, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Brunon Schulz, and Witold Gombrowicz, among others. Among his best-known translations are those of Gombrowicz's works as well as Norwid's Vade-mecum.
