Due to the coronavirus threat, this year's Leipzig Book Fair, which was to take place from 12 to 15 March, was cancelled following a joint decision made on Tuesday by the fair organisers and the city of Leipzig," a spokesman for the city authorities informed.
As the Deutsche Presse-Agentur notes, the cancellation of the fair is a huge blow to the book industry, as publishers treat this event as an opportunity to intensively promote their authors. This year's edition was expected to draw around 2500 exhibitors from 51 countries, and at the accompanying reading festival “Leipzig reads”, 3,700 events were planned at 500 reading locations in the city.
Last year, the Leipzig Book Fair was visited by 286 thousand people.
In Saxony, where Leipzig is the largest city, only one case of coronavirus has been detected so far, while in the whole of Germany, there are already 188 cases.
