“Rok na zamku” by Nikola Kucharska in English with support from the Book Institute

A translation of Nikola Kucharska's book Rok na zamku (“A Year in the Castle”) has been published in the UK. The publication, translated by Anna Władyka-Leittretter, was supported by the Book Institute under the ©POLAND Translation Programme.

Nikola Kucharska's book, whose English title reads A Year in the Castle, has been published by London-based Prestel Junior, part of Penguin Random House.

In this book, the author invites young readers to visit the castle of King Bolebor and Queen Drogomira, where one can meet, among others, the royal daughters, a bard looking for love, a lonely ghost, the monk Blavatek, the mischievous jester Bell, the eternally quarrelling royal advisors, and many, many others. A Year in the Castle is an extraordinary book that stimulates the imagination, develops perceptiveness, story-telling skills and, above all, guarantees great fun.

Nikola Kucharska is an illustrator and author of many books and comics for the youngest readers. Very popular with the youngest readers is her How Does it Work? series, which includes Budowle ("Buildings"), Sport ("Sports"), Książki ("Books"), and Zwierzęta (“Animals”). The author cooperates with many publishers, not only in Poland, but also in France, China, Russia, Korea, Germany, or Spain.

The ©Poland Translation Programme is one of the Book Institute's flagship programmes. Its aim is to promote Polish literature around the world by providing financial support for the publication of Polish books in translation into foreign languages. Foreign publishers may use the funding grant to finance part of the work's publication costs, including, among other things, the translation of the work from Polish into another language, the purchase of copyright licences, and the printing of the book. In 2023 alone, we have subsidised 229 foreign editions of Polish books to be published by publishing houses from 46 countries, to which we have allocated almost PLN 5 million. In all editions of the programme, we have already subsidised a total of more than 3,000 translations of Polish books into foreign languages.
