The works of Joanna Concejo, award-winning Polish illustrator, are on display at the Old Town Gallery in Havana's Rubén Martínez Villena Library, en Plaza de Armas (calle Obispo, entre Baratillo y Oficios, Habana Vieja) from 22-30 April. The opening of the exhibition took place on Friday at 3pm.
As part of the XXX International Book Fair, the artist will give a lecture entitled The Lost Soul - the World of Illustration (Monday 25 April, 2pm, Salón de Profesionales de la Biblioteca Provincial Rubén Martínez Villena). On Tuesday, April 26, 11 a.m., together with Cuban illustrator Hanna Chomenko, winner of the 2019 "La Rosa Blanca" illustrator award, she will host a workshop for children (Aula-taller at the Rubén Martínez Villena Library).
Joanna Concejo (1971) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, Poland. She has received numerous awards and mentions, including Grand Prix D'illustration MIJ 2021 for the book Senegal, Special Mention "Fiction" Bologna Ragazzi Award 2018 for the book Zgubiona dusza ("The Lost Soul"), the IBBY Book of the Year Award 2013 for the illustrations for the book Książe w cukierni (“The Prince in the Pastry Shop”), as well as Calabria Encantata 2004.
Her books have been published in Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Korea, Romania, and Mexico. She has also collaborated with several magazines, including "DPI" / Taiwan, "Tiny Pencils" / UK, "Influence" / France, "Kukbuk" / Poland, and others.
Concejo collaborates with Wydawnictwo Literackie as an illustrator of books by the 2018 Nobel Prize for Literature winner, Olga Tokarczuk.
As part of the ©POLAND Translation Programme, the Book Institute also supported the translation of Tokarczuk and Concejo's book The Lost Soul into a number of other languages: English (translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones), Danish (translated by Hanne Lone Tønnesen), Czech (translated by Barbora Doležalova), French (translated by Margot Carlier), Hungarian (translated by Viktória Kellermann), Catalan (translated by Xavier Farré), Bulgarian (translated by Silvia Borisova), and Spanish (translated by Xavier Farré).
